Google Home Page - Droid Landing Page Grudge Match
So, the "Droid" phone is out. Verizon is blanketing the airwaves, and Google has granted what is probably the most valuable real estate on the planet to promote the phone.
That is newsworthy in and of itself, but the real drama happens after you click. It is Google's traffic and, wisely, they have chosen to craft the landing page:
Handsome, classy, clear. Suggestive of Apple while being 100% Google-y. Clear statement of benefits. Now for the contender, just click on the "Get the Verizon Droid" button:
Wow. What were the meetings like between these guys? In comes Verizon with a hyper-aggressive, dude-tech, post-apocalyptic landing page. Vaguely menacing, it asks for the deal. Which one is better?
But wait, we are just in the first round. Click on the buy now and (after an interstitial to ask for your zip), you get this, in Flash:
This might be the picture in Merriam-Webster by the term "Un-Google-y". So, which message wins? Classic spy v. spy, white hate/black hat. Simple v. complex.
I found your article to be useful and well taken. However, I would like to agree with and briefly expand on your point in your Relevancy section. If your web site has multiple pages, it is important to consider your internal linking structure and have the link to go to one of your deeper pages if that page provide the most click-on relevancy.
